On May 18th, Hilary Lister will embark on a sailing expedition circumnavigating Britain. This is no ordinary sailing journey: diagnosed with a degenerative disease as a young adult, the 36-year-old Lister is now a quadriplegic. Lister uses a “sip ‘n’ puff” system, where she sips and puffs into straws that control the direction of the boat and trim of the sails. The boat itself cost $30,000, with an additional $22,000 for the mechanics.
